{July 24, 2008}   Hellyboy

Hellboy has ads in the movie. Now days this has become normal. The media is a tool for propaganda. However, it is irrational to show beer and cigars in movies like this. The movie is mainly targeted to appeal for younger audiences. It is action related, but it cannot show Tecate ads and Cuban cigars to younger children. The ads promote:

- That is a courageous man

- He can get them illegally just because he works for the government (Cuban cigars are prohibited in this country)

- He is the main character and he is tough (he is the bad boy)

These kinds of commercials are illegal in this country; yet, commercials like this are still show in America and the rest of the world. Stereotyping the good character has a smoker and a drinker sells the image of a winner. This is false and misleads young generations.

{July 21, 2008}   Like a Boy

Sherry Argov author of Why men Love Bitches gave an advice to females in her book: the bitch [babe in total control of herself] is not governed by fear of losing a man, because she knows the real price to pay is when she loses herself (118). Then she added: Instead of working so hard to please him, [your lover] work harder to please yourself…because ultimately, this is what will truly please him (171). As a woman I agree, women should be reign by themselves and to not be shackle at the mercy of men. The music video that I like is Like a Boy by Ciara for its autonomy.

Like a Boy by Ciara is an eye-opener to females, because it tells men to stop using women and it tells women to become more independent. Attitude does not make the gender. For that reason, I am a fan of the song.  There is no point of being a traditional woman when we are being traitors to ourselves. I hope you enjoy the video. I know I will.

{July 14, 2008}   WALL-E

On saturday night I went to the movies, and watched Wall-e which is an acronym for Waste Allocateion Load Litter Earth-class. Wall-e was directed by Andrew Stanton who also worked in Finding Nemo and A Bug’s Life; the sound was designed by Oscar-winner Ben Burtt. Wall-e is a robot who can be collapse like a turtle when he is scared. He was designed by using true materials. The introduction of the movie was hilarious; it was introduced by the vignette of a rabbit wanting a carrot, and going through a lot of trouble in order to get it from a magician who only wanted to get his act well-done. My emotions were awake since the beginning. After the introduction, the movie conveyed: emotional contagion, and personal hesitation.

Emotional contagial was transmitted by breaking the norm of traditional animation by using pantomime as well as robotic noises. MacLane said in Animation magazine, “He [Wall-e] doesn’t have a mouth, and there’s not a lot of head and shoulder acting we could do, aside from moving his head up and down…so the hands are very important in the film. His hands these huge trowel-things that could be perceived as dangerous, so it was important to soften them up and make them feel like they were sensitive organs that mirroed his emotions.” Wall-e had no facial expressions other than eye-movements. However, his pupils got bigger when something emotional occurred. For example, when looking at Eva (his infatuated love) his pupils augmented. This film had a traditional plot: Wall-e lived in an ordinary word, was called into action, but refuse his called until something bad happened. In this case, his lovely Eva was taked away by AXOM. The movie’s plot is followed by the Western idea of love. The western culture has the belief that love conquers all. And that, love has no boundaries. Does it really? Can we love so much that we can change our destiny without any care?

Oppression and slavery were the secondary themes besides love. Robots were oppressed by the human race. Robots faced slavery, because they were ruled by men. Men designed them and used them at their conveniece. The robots’ main goal in life were to make human race happy. It was such the human laziness that they were transported from point A to point B in personalize cars. In the movie, it was joked that over the years humans had loss bone density. The morale is to: exercise and be fit.

Powerful Penis

Ohhh…the unreliable penis (Latin for tail), the one that has a mind of its own, the one that distributes power in a sort of speak. Around the world the penis is the haven of power, fertility, pleasure and anxiety. This ad aims to broadcast fear toward men. Men are supposed to have an erectile penis when having an arousal. The more potent (Latin for ability or power) the penis the better, right? This fear is (safe) rescued by the tennis shoe. The tennis shoe gives it length. Other symbols that send out the message of power are the medal and the standing hand with the black glove.

A recognizable psychologist, Freud assumed that the fount of power was the penis. Much to this dispute many feminist disagree arguing that men are not dominant over women. Freud’s theory claimed that female desire to have a penis, which he named it, penis envy. The penis powerfulness is so formidable that men faced “castration anxiety” while growing up. Master & Johnson called this the “phallic phallacy,” the idea that the larger the penis the more effective the male is in coital connection (Human Sexuality, Strong, 108).

But in reality the function of the penis is to: keep the sperm and let the urine pass. The penis is only aroused if the vessels are filled with blood. This expands the penis. Was the man aroused by Nike? Is the tennis shoe so cool? Once again this is only one way to grab our attention. It is through emotion.
