Ohhh…the unreliable penis (Latin for tail), the one that has a mind of its own, the one that distributes power in a sort of speak. Around the world the penis is the haven of power, fertility, pleasure and anxiety. This ad aims to broadcast fear toward men. Men are supposed to have an erectile penis when having an arousal. The more potent (Latin for ability or power) the penis the better, right? This fear is (safe) rescued by the tennis shoe. The tennis shoe gives it length. Other symbols that send out the message of power are the medal and the standing hand with the black glove.
A recognizable psychologist, Freud assumed that the fount of power was the penis. Much to this dispute many feminist disagree arguing that men are not dominant over women. Freud’s theory claimed that female desire to have a penis, which he named it, penis envy. The penis powerfulness is so formidable that men faced “castration anxiety” while growing up. Master & Johnson called this the “phallic phallacy,” the idea that the larger the penis the more effective the male is in coital connection (Human Sexuality, Strong, 108).
But in reality the function of the penis is to: keep the sperm and let the urine pass. The penis is only aroused if the vessels are filled with blood. This expands the penis. Was the man aroused by Nike? Is the tennis shoe so cool? Once again this is only one way to grab our attention. It is through emotion.
hahaha, that ad actually made me laugh out loud. I think this just goes right back to the saying “Sex Sells.” By using the shoe as a penis, the ad creates endless symbolism, most likely even sparking controversy (which I’m sure the advertisers would LOVE). You’re right though, controversial subjects that provoke emotion, really have become the most effective way to grab peoples’ attention.
is this a real ad? There’s no way it was shown in the U.S. right?
When you see these products, that clame to do something that is going to help you, they are usually not telling you the truth. People have used this body part to scare men. These adds have given sex a bad name. Something that is supposed to be happening in a natural way, has been corrupted by these ads. They are trying to make men turn into someone else. People should be happy with what they have. when someone places that much importants on something like this, that tells me a lot about the person. It is sad that this is happening.
Hey… interesting article.. I want to ask a question.. Why are you fascinated by this advertisement? don’t be shy… in depth.. thanks
